Some
entertaining news for our readers: Google Earth has recently fixed a
fault which gave an accurate position for the lost and magical continent
of Atlantis. Here’s the story: for a while now, a snap on the Google
Earth map represented the Atlantic seafloor with a grid-like pattern,
which some vigilant people insisted were sunken streets of Atlantis.
Atlantis is known as a naval power which conquered many parts of Western Europe and Africa approximately 9600 BC. However, when their attempt to invade Athens failed, Atlantis sank into the ocean in a single day and night of misfortune.
To great disappointment of people believing in magic, Google insisted the grid was only a data artifact from the sonar method usually used by the oceanographers to map the seafloor. In the beginning of February, Google finally updated its software using new seafloor data from the Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California, San Diego, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Of course, after the update the grid pattern disappeared and Atlantis was no longer on Google maps.
People who were sad to see Atlantis sinking again, this time forever, may suggest that the lizards didn’t want humans to find the lost continent. As for the search giant, it was simply obeying the orders. Meanwhile, a number f experts, including David Sandwell, a Scripps geophysicist (who definitely isn’t a lizard), told in the interview that the initial version of Google Ocean represented a newly developed prototype having high resolution, though also containing too many errors. In fact, the statistics says for itself: it took UCSD undergraduate students more than 3 years to find out and fix the blunders, according to experts.
